Why fietser?
'Fiets' is the Dutch word for 'bicycle' and 'fietser' is simply a 'bicycle rider'! When one of our co-founders studied in Amsterdam, they were blown away by how almost everyone biked basically everywhere: for work, for errands and for visiting family and friends. It's also important to note that it wasn't always like this in the Netherlands. In the 1970s, people protested with their children because of the increasingly negative consequences of car-dependency which can lead to obesity, fatal collisions and air pollution.
To us being a fietser isn't the same as being a ‘cyclist’. It’s less about sport and more about a lifestyle that represents change for better mental and physical health, cleaner air, lesser noise and safer streets. There are many places across the world adopting these changes for more fietsers as we shift our built environment in response to the pandemic and climate change.
We want to acknowledge this in support of those who ride bikes for their health or the environment!
Your Community
fietserFriends is a network for anyone that wants to meet local fietsers and connect with others in our hinterland community who follow and support the malenyBikes community initiative. You’ll be able to join our FB Group to hear about any upcoming events, engagement and/or advocacy activities as well as provide input on what sort of bicycle-friendly things you’d like to see more of around town.

Activities
We encourage informal meetups to provide the opportunity for fietsers and friends to connect! These are usually shared on the fietserFriends FB Group or on our malenyBikes FB Page.
Bike + Bikkies
This event is a super casual meet and greet. Come for a chat about our plans and see who's currently riding their bikes around town.
Bring your eBikes, bicycles, tricycles and yourself (even if you don't have a bike)!
Bike + Ride
This event is a casual social ride. Routes depend on the fietser who organises it- which could be you! Anyone can organise a social ride.
Bring your set of wheels and join your fellow fietsers on a journey!
